Rocky Mountain Transport is a non-software-specific information processing simulation designed to develop thinking skills as well as information processing skills. In this simulation students work for Rocky Mountain Transport, a company that provides a van service between Denver and various ski areas.
Rocky Mountain Transport consists of ten projects that call for the application of basic and advanced features found in most software suites. Before beginning a project, students consider the information processing features and the amount of time needed to complete the assignment. Students then fill out a Project Planning Form. While working on an assignment, students record how much time it takes to complete their work in the Job Log. After completing the job, students fill out a Project Evaluation Form.
Students are also required to consult the Rocky Mountain Transport Procedures Guide when making document format decisions. The Procedures Guide provides sample letters, sample memos, a sample transmittal slip, mailing label and envelope formatting guidelines, guidelines for preparing graphs, a sample report, and proofreaders' marks. Clip art for desktop publishing jobs and a Rocky Mountain Transport letterhead master are included in the back of the book.
Another interesting feature of Rocky Mountain Transport is the quality circle. Quality circle assignments are built-in interactive sessions in which students learn to work together and to evaluate one another's work.
An Instructor's Key and Student Working Files Master Disk are free upon request with a class-size order. Rocky Mountain Transport is a "thinking" simulation that will help students to learn not only applications, but also how to plan and organize work, make decisions on the best way to complete a job, estimate time for completion accurately, and evaluate their own work and the work of others.
